A liquid in contact with a thermally conductive solid surface at the hot interface of a heat pipe absorbs heat from the surface and condenses into a vapor. The latent heat is then released as the vapor condenses back into a liquid after traveling along the heat pipe to the cold interface. By capillary action, centrifugal force, or gravity, the liquid then returns to the heated interface, and the cycle is then repeated. Heat pipes are extremely efficient thermal conductors because boiling and condensation have very high heat transfer coefficients.
